Asia Society Hong Kong Center is proud to present the inaugural program in our Scholar-in-Residence Series featuring ASHK Scholar, Professor Christine Loh. The ASHK Scholar-in-Residence Program is an initiative to appoint and engage leading thinkers based in Hong Kong to contribute significant research and original analysis in areas of critical importance to Asia. As part of this program, the Scholars will give public talks and briefings to present and discuss research findings, analysis, and policy recommendations.  

In part two of this program, Professor Loh will discuss China’s decarbonization pathway to 2060. In conversation with Evan Li, HSBC Head of Energy Transition Research for Asia-Pacific, Professor Loh will explore China’s radical plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, including its aggressive efforts and strategy to meet this timeline, as well as the role Hong Kong can play in these efforts.

Professor Christine Loh, SBS, JP, OBE, Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite, is Chief Development Strategist at the Institute for the Environment, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), engaging in teaching and research. Her teaching experience includes a course on Non-Market Risks at the Anderson School of Management, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) from 2018-22. She is Visiting Scholar at the Anderson School of Management’s Center for Global Management (2023-24).

She was Under Secretary for the Environment in the HKSAR Government (2012-17). Between April 2019 and March 2020, she was the Special Consultant to the Office of the Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government on the ecological civilization aspects of the Greater Bay Area Outline Development Plan. She has also been a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council. Loh has been active in public policy and politics since the 1980s. She founded and was the CEO of the non-profit think tank, Civic Exchange (2000-12), and helped to establish several charitable foundations, and non-profit organizations in Hong Kong related to the environment, equal opportunity, and arts and culture. Professor Loh is a published author of books and many academic and popular works.

Professor Loh is currently a board member of CDP Worldwide, Global Maritime Forum, New Forests Pty Ltd, and Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited. She holds an English law degree from the University of Hull, England, and a Master of Law degree in Chinese and Comparative Law from the City University of Hong Kong. She has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Law, honoris causa, by the University of Hull in 2001, and Doctor of Science, honoris causa by the University of Exeter in 2016.

Evan Li is HSBC’s Head of Energy Transition Research for Asia-Pacific, as well as for Conglomerates Research in Greater China. Currently, Evan and his team cover 50 stocks spanning across different subsets such as wind, solar, oil and gas, environment, coal fired IPPs, and conglomerate companies. He is a top-ranked analyst, voted best for energy and utilities research by Asiamoney at the Regional Brokers Poll in 2022, and also top ranked in utilities during 2016-21. In 2014, he was also voted as one of the two best for public utilities research in the Institutional Investor All-China survey. Evan began his career at a Big Four accounting firm, where he was involved in auditing, corporate finance and IT consulting. He later became an equity research analyst and worked at a number of leading global investment banks before joining HSBC in 2015, accumulating a total of 20 years’ experience in utilities research. He has a BBA in information systems and holds the CPA and CGMA designations
