Asia Society Australia warmly welcomes you to an evening to discuss human rights across Asia featuring Daniela Gavshon, Australia Director of Human Rights Watch. Daniela will explore key human rights matters in our region and how these issues affect Australia’s relationships with its Indo-Pacific neighbours.  

Join us to hear about the nuances of working in human rights / non-profit advocacy, and career insights for young professionals aspiring to make their mark in this domain.  

We will conclude the evening with drinks, canapés, and the chance to mingle with our vibrant Sydney-based Gen A community of emerging leaders.

About our Speakers

 Daniela Gavshon, Australia Director, Human Rights Watch

Daniela Gavshon is the Australia director at Human Rights Watch. She leads the organization’s engagement with the Australian government on foreign and domestic policy. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, she spent ten years working at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre where she founded the Truth and Accountability program. There, she led human rights and war crimes investigations and a landmark project mapping laws and policies affecting First Nations people in Australia.

From 2009-2012, Daniela was the Solomon Islands Head of Office for the International Center for Transitional Justice where she advised and supported the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In addition, Daniela has held positions in the Australian government foreign aid portfolio and with UN Women working on women, peace and security. Daniela holds degrees in law and arts from the University of Sydney and obtained a master’s in international humanitarian law from the Geneva Academy on International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.

She is the Asia-Pacific Liaison Officer of the International Bar Association’s War Crimes Committee. 

Aster Haile, Program Manager, Asia Society Australia

 Aster Haile joined Asia Society Australia in November 2022. Aster contributes to the organisations Melbourne based programming, and leads the Generation Asia platform.

Aster graduated from RMIT University with a Bachelor of Arts (International Studies). During her studies, she was awarded a New Colombo Plan scholarship by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and undertook 18 months of study in Indonesia focused on regional security in Southeast Asia and international development. Aster is passionate about migration issues, having worked with Migrant CARE in Jakarta and written a thesis on the rights of labour migrants in Singapore.

Prior to working with Asia Society Australia, Aster was a Program and Engagement Manager for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Victoria, expanding the reach of the world’s leading youth development program.

She is currently undertaking a Master of Development Studies at the University of Melbourne. Aster speaks fluent Indonesian, and intermediate Malay.
