Bring art, history, and culture to the classroom! At Asia Society Texas' open house, educators are invited to learn about classroom resources, field trip opportunities, and innovative ways to use media — from webcomics to video games to TV shows — through curriculum-relevant presentations.
- Learn about field trip opportunities: Take a self-guided tour of Asia Society Texas' new permanent exhibition Explore Asia and visit with partners from the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston and Holocaust Museum Houston.
- Access resources for immediate classroom use: Explore Asia Society Texas' new Asia in the Classroom resources, which include student-facing webcomics and an educator portal with lesson guides and classroom tools. Sign up to join our spring cohort to receive coaching and support in teaching about Asia and Asian American experiences in the classroom.
- Enjoy quick professional development: Learn techniques to implement immediately in your classroom with our mini professional development blocks featuring scholars, researchers, and educators.
Participants will receive CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits upon completion of this free event, and raffle prizes and other exciting surprises await!
Workshop Details
Manga POP! Using Webcomics to Teach About Asia
- 5–5:30 p.m.
- Presented by Nina Shimaguchi, Asia Society Texas Japan Outreach Educator, and Janjay Mason, Asia Society Texas Education and Outreach Coordinator.
- For Grades 4-7
Explore the exciting world of webcomics with Nina Shimaguchi and Janjay Mason! Using Asia Society’s resource, Adventures of Asia, gain knowledge, skills, and strategies for incorporating the teaching of Japan's history and culture through webcomics.
Building Knowledge Through Game Development
- 5:30–6 p.m.
- Presented by Phuong Ha, Asia Society Texas Education and Outreach Manager, and Ashley Gelato, Asia Society Texas Content Specialist.
- For All Grade Levels and Subjects
In this interactive session, learn how to apply techniques from the video game creation process — both technical and nontechnical — to engage students in collaborative, creative work aligned to your curriculum. Phuong Ha and Ashley Gelato will discuss the benefits of using video game development as a method of introducing complex topics including cultural studies, history, and more.
Scholar Chat: Teaching the Chinese Diaspora Through Images, Maps, and Film
- 6–6:30 p.m.
- Presented by Dr. Melody Yunzi Li, University of Houston.
- For Middle School, High School, and Dual Credit/AP Students
Learn about film analysis with Dr. Melody Li. Through selected clips from TV shows, attendees will work with their groups to discuss and focus on specific aspects of film — characters, setting, plot, colors, photography, etc. Learn about activities that would be useful for any humanities class that aims to teach critical analytical skills to students.
Education and Outreach programs at Asia Society Texas are presented by AARP. Generous funding also provided by Asia Chemical Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation (Americas). Free Thursday exhibition admission presented by Regions Bank.
