World-renowned historian and award-winning author Dr. Peter Frankopan is presenting “Global Greece: A History” for the inaugural Thalia Potamianos Lecture Series hosted by the Gennadius Library.
In “Greece: Futures,” Dr. Frankopan will look forward, taking the story of global Greece from independence in 1821 to the present, and on into the future. He will chart the roles that Greece has played, is playing, and will play, not only in its own neighborhood in southeastern Europe but also in other regions, locations, and continents, including Asia. Dr. Frankopan will assess what the 21st century has in store for Greece, Greek culture and language, and Europe as a whole in a rapidly changing world.
“Greece: Futures” will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at 6 p.m. Glenn D. Lowry, director of The Museum of Modern Art, will introduce the speaker.

Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University and Associate Director of the Programme for Silk Roads Studies at King’s College Cambridge. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Geographic Society, he is also President of the Royal Society of Asian Affairs. His books include The New Silk Roads: the Present and Future of the World, which won the Carical Prize for Social Sciences; and The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, that has sold 2m copies around the world, was a Sunday Times Book of the Decade, New York Times Bestseller, #1 in China, India, UK and beyond, and named one of the 25 most important books translated into Chinese alongside Pride & Prejudice and The Great Gatsby. It was described by the Berliner Zeitung as ‘not only the most important history book in years, but the most important in decades.’ One of World’s 50 Top Thinkers (Prospect), he was described as ‘the rockstar historian du jour’ (Sunday Times) and the ‘first great historian of the 21st century’ by Brazil’s DCM magazine.
Glenn D. Lowry became the sixth director of The Museum of Modern Art in 1995. Lowry continues the Museum’s legacy of enriching public life through exhibitions, educational programs, publications, and digital tools that challenge conventional ideas about modern and contemporary art and design, and initiatives that bring MoMA’s renowned collection and research to audiences worldwide. Lowry has significantly developed the Museum’s holdings in all mediums, adding entire collections of contemporary drawings, Fluxus, and Conceptual art,along with the archives of Frank Lloyd Wright.
He is a member of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s board of trustees, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the steering committee for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and a resident member of the American Philosophical Society. Lowry with the title of Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He received a BA magna cum laude from Williams College, an MA and a PhD in the history of art from Harvard University, and honorary degrees from the College of William and Mary and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
