Members-Only Lecture, Connecting Empires: Shipwrecks, Ceramics, and Maritime Trade in Ninth-Century Asia, on Tuesday, March 7, 6:30 pm
This exhibition brings the precious contents of a shipwreck discovered off Belitung Island in the Java Sea to American audiences for the first time. The remarkable cargo of spice-filled jars and all together more than 60,000 ceramics produced in China during the Tang dynasty (618–906), plus luxury items of gold and silver, was bound for West Asia. The exhibition will bring to light how this discovery—one of the most important archaeological revelations of the twentieth century—has changed the way we understand ninth-century Asia.
Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia is co-organized by Asia Society and the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore. Objects are from the Khoo Teck Puat Gallery, Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore. The Tang Shipwreck Collection was made possible by the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat in honor of the Late Khoo Teck Puat. The exhibition is on view from March 7 to June 4, 2017.
Peranakan hors d’oeuvres by Michelin star chef Malcolm Lee
Asia Society Museum and the Singapore Tourism Board will co-present a special reception featuring Chef Malcolm Lee of the world’s first and only Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant Candlenut. Specially for the opening of Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia, Chef Malcolm will travel from Singapore to prepare refined Peranakan hors d’oeuvres with his signature modern twist. Peranakans are Straits-born Chinese from Singapore, Melaka and Penang who enjoy a unique hybrid culture of Malay, Chinese, and western heritage. This translates to the distinctive cuisine of the Peranakan community, known for its blend of rich flavors and complex methods of preparation. Chef Malcolm will bring his vast, global culinary experience to Asia Society to serve delicious and authentic—yet innovative—Peranakan hors d’oeuvres for this exciting exhibition opening!
