Although the recent sale of the digital work by Beeple, Everydays: The First 5000 Days, has shocked and surprised the art world, it should not surprise anyone who appreciates the inherent problems in art valuation. Traditional methods of valuation for non-digital works are not in jeopardy because some of these markets are quite stable, but there have always been challenges. However, the new digital infrastructure could have significant implications for how art will be valued and treated in the future as an asset class. In this talk for newer collectors and art enthusiasts, I will cover three things: (1) the key factors typically used in art valuation, including the Mei Moses index, (2) the intricate structure of art auctions, and (3) how the market may be transformed by a new digital infrastructure.
