VIEW EVENT DETAILSTALKS X Asia Society - Art Central Series
Discussion 12:30 – 1:30pm
Through his intrinsic contrasting of both beauty and the odious, celebrated Pakistani artist Rashid Rana’s work subliminally imposes upon his viewers the delicate acknowledgement of manipulation, repetition and rearrangement. From his intricate processes to the digitalization of his methodologies, this afternoon presentation will detail both the innate practice and production of Rana’s art form as well as discuss his work as both a teacher and artistic director of the upcoming Lahore Biennale which will make its debut this November. In conversation with Rana is the Vice President of Global Arts & Cultural Programs and Director of Asia Society Museum, Boon Hui Tan.
Rashid Rana is known for his conceptual sculptures, videos, and photo composite collages that provocatively deconstruct social histories and cultural disjunctions to reflect the duality of our time. He has participated in major exhibitions including My East is Your West, a collateral event at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015); Mohatta Palace Museum, Karachi (2013); Cornerhouse, Manchester (2011); Asia Society Museum, New York (2009); and Musée Guimet, Paris (2010) among others. Rana was recently appointed the artistic director of the 2017 Lahore Biennale. He is also the founding faculty member and current Dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design at the Beaconhouse National University in Lahore.
Boon Hui Tan is Vice President for Global Arts and Cultural Programs, and Director, Asia Society Museum, NY, where he leads the organisation’s global arts and cultural activities spanning visual arts, performing arts and film. As museum director, he oversees Asia Society Museum’s acclaimed exhibition programmes and collections, including the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection of Traditional Asian Art and the Contemporary Art Collection of photography and new media works by Asian and Asian American artists. Prior to this, he was Assistant Chief Executive (Museum & Programs) at the National Heritage Board (NHB) in Singapore overseeing exhibitions, programmes and outreach events across the Board’s museums, institutions and divisions. Tan is a founding board member of the International Biennial Association.
