Leadership in a New Age
VIEW EVENT DETAILSJoin Asia Society Hong Kong for a conversation with Geraldine Buckingham, previously BlackRock’s Chair and Head of Asia Pacific and a member of the firm’s Global Executive Committee, moderated by Dee Poon, Managing Director of Brands and Distribution at Esquel Group. The two will discuss Leadership in a New Age including: leading through uncertainty and crisis — what do employees need from leaders in times of uncertainty and crisis; how to build a pipeline of future leaders, especially women — as research on gender equity in financial services from Deloitte projects that in 2030 the percentage of women in "next generation" leadership roles in Asia; and advice for future leaders as well as for current leaders.
Previously Geraldine Buckingham was BlackRock’s Chair and Head of Asia Pacific and a member of the firm’s Global Executive Committee. She was responsible for all business activities in the region, which included Greater China, Japan, Australasia, Southeast Asia, India and Korea. Prior to her APAC role, Dr. Buckingham served as BlackRock’s Global Head of Corporate Strategy. She was named to Fortune Magazine and Crain’s New York Business’ “40 Under 40” lists for 2017.
Prior to joining BlackRock in 2014, Dr. Buckingham was a partner with McKinsey & Company’s financial services practice based in New York. She worked primarily with large global asset managers with additional experience in wealth management and private equity, as well as functional expertise in strategy and organization.
Dr. Buckingham received the Rhodes scholarship to study at Oxford University, where she earned a Master of Philosophy degree in Comparative Social Policy. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees from Monash University.
Dee Poon (Moderator) is the Managing Director of Brands and Distribution at Esquel Group.
Dee is a board member of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (Hong Kong) and M Plus Museum Limited. She is also a member of the International Advisory Committee of Harvard University’s Asia Center (Cambridge, MA), the Family Advisory Council of the Ownership Project at Oxford Saïd, as well as on the Global Steering Committee of Social Entrepreneurship to Spur Health (Hong Kong & London). She serves on The Conference Board’s Asia Corporate Leadership Council. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Esquel-Y.L. Yang Education Foundation. In 2014, Dee was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and designated a Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s China Fellowship Program.
Actively engaged in the arts, Dee sits on the International Council of the Tate (London), and the International Council of The Museum of Modern Art (New York). She serves on the Board of Directors of the China Arts Foundation (Beijing & New York). Dee has also been on the Performance Committee at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), a member of the Lincoln Center China Advisory Council (New York) and was a co-founder of the Ambassadors of Design (Hong Kong). Her 42-second short film “An Exercise in Futility,” shot as part of 42x42, was screened at the Beijing International Film Festival as well as the Cannes Film Festival.
Before joining Esquel, Dee was an Editor-at-Large for iLook Magazine and a featured columnist for Modern Weekly, where she wrote about sustainability. Her 2008 pop-up retail venture DYSEMEVAS was one of the first to highlight the emerging Chinese design scene outside of China.
Dee graduated from Harvard University with a BA in philosophy.
