Pop-culture surrounds us from art, fashion, music to literature and with the rise of Korean-pop around the globe South Korea’s government has long been cultivating its creative industries in a diplomatic endeavor to encourage cross-cultural diversity. In this talk and presentation from Michael Jung of CJ ENM and Yang-Hwan Lee of Korea Creative Content Agency, they will explore the impact Korean pop culture has created on the country’s soft power, national identity and policy-making, and moderated by Jodie Chan, local artist and musician talking to the intersections between Hong Kong and the East-Asian markets in a global context.
Michael Jung is the Managing Director of CJ ENM Hong Kong Ltd, with an expanded remit as COO of joint venture production house, True CJ Creations in Thailand from June 2021. Previous roles within the CJ ENM Global Business include Head of Contents and Business Development for CJ ENM Vietnam, Head of Contents and Production for CJ ENM Hong Kong; Head of Programming, Channel M / Southeast Asia; senior posts in programming and acquisition for both tvN Korea and O’live TV Korea. Michael also produced two seasons of Challenge To Chef, Korea’s first chef-wannabe competition reality show; and singing competition Office Idol season one; and executive produced three seasons of regional K-pop audition show, K-Pop Star Hunt, among others.
Yang-Hwan Lee served as the head of the policy division of the Korea Creative Content Agency(KOCCA) from 2018 to 2021, and is currently serving as the director of the game division. He received a Ph.D degree in mass communications, and has been working at KOCCA on establishing future policies and implementation plans for the content industry such as game, broadcasting, webtoon, and music, etc. In particular, he is very interested in changes in content users due to the convergence of technology-media-content, and is paying attention to changes in the global content industry before and after COVID-19.
A tech executive that has led the Notey team to launch and grow the Chinafy platform - a virtually one-touch solution, and the first of its kind, to automate China compatibility for almost any website, empowering global companies to better access China. Chan oversees strategy, product and growth for Notey Labs (one of the leading tech start ups in Hong Kong featured on Techcrunch, BBC, CNBC, highlighted as one of the “15 Fastest Growing start ups in the world”).
By night, Jodie Chan is also an established singer songwriter who collaborates with local indie musicians with live gigs across the city and writes music influenced by her background in musical theatre, pop and indie folk. She was also recently featured on MTV Introducing. You can find her music on Spotify, apple, YouTube and more.
