What a sparkling moment when Chinese music blend with western music! Young and talented musicians from the Hong Kong String Orchestra are sharing the joy of the Chinese New Year with us! The concert begins with an energetic String Quartet No.1, Op.1 by Tchaikovsky followed by two traditional Chinese folk songs ‘Joy of Spring (新春樂)’ and ‘When will the Acacia bloom? (槐花幾時開?)’. To welcome the approaching spring, the Quartet will perform Mozart’s famous ‘Spring’ quartet and then Quartet No.12 Op.96 by Dvorak, depicting the beautiful spring season with flowers blossom.
Violin - CHIK YIU-TING, FRANCIS Having begun his violin studies at the age of 5 at the Junior Department of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he studied with Lily Lee and Tina Qu, violinist Yiu-Ting Chik (Francis) is a rising performer who touches the audience’s hearts with his passionate playing.
Violin - CHOW YIP-WAI graduated from the New England Conservatory with a Master’s degree, under the tutelage of Ayano Ninomiya. Previously, he earned his Bachelor’s degree and Performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Robin Scott and Charles Castleman. Currently, Yip Wai performs on a 1723 J.B. Vuillaume which is generously made possible by Orfeo Strings, Hong Kong.
Viola - CALEB WONG’s introduction to classical music began on the violin at the age of five, with his abecedarians’ influences and the need of a violist in his quartets, Caleb decided to choose the viola as his major instrument at the age of 17 and established himself as a finalist of the Washington International Competitions and the Generation Next Arts Competition.
Cello - CHENG YAN-HO, A native from Hong Kong, started the cello with Ming-Yuen Cheung, Joliana Lai, Hiu-Lo Tung and later Prof. Ray Wang. After finishing his high school at La Salle College, he graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University with a Master degree in Cello Performance under the guidance of Peter Stumpf and Brandon Vamos . He has played in the masterclass of Gregory Beaver, Johannes Moser, Li-Wei Qin and studied with Thomas Landschoot and Felix Wang in other occasions.
