Executive Briefing | Kevin Rudd on the War in Ukraine – Beijing’s Position and Washington’s Reaction

Mr Rudd will be joined by Asia Society Australia Executive Director of Policy Richard Maude in conversation led by Dr Courtney Fung of Macquarie University.
Recently returned from three days of consultations in Washington, Mr Rudd will update members on the latest policy developments from the conflict. The briefing will address China’s approach to the Russian invasion and the reaction by the United States. The briefing will also address the immediate and long-term ramifications for the US-China and Australia-China relationships.
This exclusive and online program will be held under Chatham House rules and attending members will have the opportunity to pose questions to speakers.

The Hon. Kevin Rudd AC, President and CEO, Asia Society
The Hon. Kevin Rudd AC is President and CEO of the Asia Society, and inaugural President of the Asia Society Policy Institute. He served as 26th Prime Minister of Australia (2007 to 2010, 2013) and as Foreign Minister (2010 to 2012). He is Chair of the Board of the International Peace Institute in New York, and Chair of Sanitation and Water for All – a global partnership of government and non-governmental organizations dedicated to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6. He is a Distinguished Fellow at Chatham House and the Paulson Institute, and a Distinguished Statesman with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is also a member of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization’s Group of Eminent Persons.
Courtney Fung, Associate Professor, Department of Security Studies & Criminology, Macquarie University
Dr. Courtney J. Fung is an associate professor in the department of security studies & criminology at Macquarie University and an associate in research at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University. Her research focuses on how rising powers, such as China and India, address the norms and provisions for a global security order. She is the author of China and Intervention at the UN Security Council: Reconciling Status (Oxford University Press, 2019).
Richard Maude, Executive Director of Policy at Asia Society Australia, Senior Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute
Richard Maude is Executive Director of Policy at Asia Society Australia and a Senior Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute. He is a former senior Australian government official with 30 years’ experience in foreign policy and national security.
From 2018 to 2019, Mr Maude was Deputy Secretary, Indo-Pacific Group, in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Australia’s senior official to the East Asia Summit. In 2017, Mr Maude was head of the whole-of-government taskforce which supported the preparation of the Australian Government’s 2017 Foreign Policy White Paper.
Mr Maude was Director-General of the Office of National Assessments from May 2013 until November 2016. Before taking up this position, Mr Maude was the senior adviser on foreign policy and national security issues to Prime Minister Julia Gillard. He has served overseas in Malaysia, where he was Deputy High Commissioner, Singapore and as the Liaison Officer for the Office of National Assessments in the Australian Embassy in Washington DC.
Mr Maude is a member of the Futures Council of the National Security College at the Australian National University.
