Webcast: Making India Great Amidst the U.S.–China Rivalry

ASIA SOCIETY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, December 1, 2020 — India will be the world's most populous country by 2024, and the world's third largest economy by 2028. But the size of its population and a sense of historical greatness are insufficient to guarantee that India will fulfill its ambition to be a global power. 2020 has seen the country embroiled in a border confrontation with China and struggle mightily with the coronavirus pandemic. Neither challenge is likely to recede any time soon, even as India traverses a difficult road toward economic recovery. The election of former Vice President Joe Biden as the next president of the United States will undoubtedly have an impact on India in 2021.

What will a Biden administration mean for U.S.–India relations? Will ongoing border tensions with Beijing bring Washington and New Delhi closer together? And will the twin health and economic crises unleashed by the pandemic lead India to make the kinds of policy changes and investments it needs to sustain its rise long-term?

Video: Hollywood's New Anime Gold Rush

ASIA SOCIETY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, November 20, 2020i — Japanese anime is the only non-English language global IP that has produced several of the world's top-grossing franchises and a long list of Hollywood adaptations. Anime is now transforming and being transformed by the worldwide growth of streaming media, which has seen massive expansion during the pandemic. In Japan, the recent record-breaking smash-hit anime movie Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has shaken the global box office, earning $200 million domestically in just 24 days. In Hollywood, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open with its first exhibition dedicated to a Japanese artist: maestro Hayao Miyazaki. What is so special about anime? A discussion on the value and charm of anime not only as a form of entertainment, but also as a form of culture that appeals to both adults and children in Japan, Hollywood, and the world.

A new policy report on Meeting the China Challenge: A New American Strategy for Technology Competition is the culmination of over a full year's deliberation and study by the bipartisan Working Group on Science and Technology in U.S.–China Relations. It sets forth broad policy objectives as well as specific recommendations for the new U.S. administration in four domains of science and technology: fundamental research, 5G digital communications, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology.
