Asia Society Museum Presents Tim Lee: In Focus
For this exhibition, the conceptual artist Tim Lee has created Blowin’ in the Wind, Bob Dylan, 1963. On view for the first time, this interactive multimedia installation is meant to function as a karaoke room in which the audience is invited to sing along to the accompaniment of Lee’s guitar cover of Dylan’s iconic folk anthem. The lyrics are projected in mirror-reverse script along the back wall of the gallery and reflected onto the mirrored wall facing the viewer, correcting this reversal. As the viewer is fed the song lyrics they are confronted with their own image singing back to them. This disorienting scenario where the viewer simultaneously sees themselves as both audience and participant is meant to provoke a thoughtful consideration of how our understanding of a situation is often relative to our perspective.
