Event Recap: Executive Roundtable on the Lunar New Year with Chef Kathy Fang
Feb 29, 2024 - In celebration of Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dragon, celebrity Chef Kathy Fang hosted Asia Society guests at her restaurant Fang in San Francisco's SOMA neighborhood. Chef Fang mixes her family’s Cantonese and Shanghainese heritage and cooking style with inspiration drawn from her perspective as a native San Franciscan, her global travels, and her formal training at the esteemed Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School. Chef Fang is also the star of Food Network's “Chef Dynasty: House of Fang" and author of the cookbook Easy Asian.
During this unique roundtable experience, Chef Fang spoke about the special and complex dynamics between her and her parents; growing up in a restaurant environment; finding her own path to the culinary world; and expanding Asian representation in culinary media. She also served a chef-curated menu - each dish conveying the story of a new year, of family, and of heritage drawn from many cultures and diaspora.
