China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power
Rob Gifford

Rob Gifford at AS Washington Center Six years after he arrived, and twenty years after he first set foot in the Middle Kingdom as a young language student, NPR® China correspondent Rob Gifford took the journey of a lifetime along the Chinese Mother Road. In China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power (Random House, 2007) Gifford travels along Route 312—China's equivalent of America’s Route 66—giving an up-close-and-personal look at the country's people and future. China Road is an exploration of China’s future and a personal pilgrimage by an author who speaks fluent Chinese. Along the road, Gifford helps to answer the questions we are all asking: Is China friend or foe? And is it really the next superpower? Could the contradictions of reform lead to a Soviet-style implosion?
