Whether you’re a Mozart aficionado or have never heard of Schumann, you don’t have to go far to be exposed the world of classical music. For those of us who know so little, to those of us who’ve devoted our modern lives to understanding that of the old, our next Young Professionals event will surely get you to appreciate classical music in full force.
Join us at the Houston Symphony for an evening of melodic genius with internationally acclaimed music of Taiwanese-American violinist, Cho-Liang Lin. After the concert, join other young professionals for drinks and hors d’oeuvres. You may be surprised to find that time spent memorizing the chorus to Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus” was perhaps no time wasted at all.

Music from the Silk Road
Izro Malakov Ensemble
Saturday, May 17, 2008 – 7:30 PM
THE ROTHKO CHAPEL
1409 Sul Ross, Houston
The drone of strings, the rhythmic chime of tambourines, wailing vocals that
sometimes explode in celebration and at other times weave mesmerizing sufiinspired
tapestries of hypnotic sound: To hear Bukharan music is to be transported
to another time and place – the Silk Road, not far from legendary Samarkand. The
ancient city of Bukhara is located in modern-day Uzbekistan, but its traditional
music, Shashmaqam, is the soundtrack of the past – of the caravans that once
connected East and West.
The Izro Malakov Ensemble bears the cultural imprint of millennia, representing a
musical heritage that is linked to family lineages of Bukharan Jewish musicians.
Embedded in the sound is the complex cultural symbiosis between Jews and
Muslims – the long centuries before the present day, when they were neighbors
and allies sharing music and bloodlines. This notable ensemble performed at
Carnegie Hall as part of the “Silk Road Project” under the direction of Yo-Yo Ma –
now, Houston enjoys a unique opportunity to celebrate this Central Asian tradition.
Come be transported, through the artistry of the Izro Malakov Ensemble, as they
present songs in Tajik, Uzbek, and Hebrew.

6:00 pm: Reception for pre-purchased bookholders
7:00 pm: Reading and Book Signing
Westin Galleria Hotel
5060 West Alabama (at the Galleria), Houston
Zakaria says of The Post American World: "This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else." Following on the success of his best-seller The Future of Freedom, his latest work describes a world in which the United States will no longer dominate the global economy, orchestrate geopolitics or overwhelm cultures. The tallest buildings, biggest dams, largest-selling movies and most advanced cell phones are all being built outside the United States. Zakaria sees the "rise of the rest" -- the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia, and many others -- as the great story of our time and one that will reshape the world.
Zakaria is the editor of Newsweek International, overseeing all Newsweek's editions abroad. His column is read in Newsweek and The Washington Post, and he is a member of the roundtable of ABC News' "This Week with George Stephanapoulos" and an analyst for ABC News. In 1999, he was named "one of the 21 most important people of the 21st Century" by Esquire Magazine.
Reservations are required at no cost. To make reservations or to pre-purchase a book, visit www.wachouston.org.
