YOSHIO TANIGUCHI

BIOGRAPHY

Yoshio Taniguchi, born in 1937 is a Japanese architect who is perhaps best known in the United States for his redesign of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The re-design and expansion opened in 2004.

Taniguchi is the son of architect Yoshiro Taniguchi (1904-1979). He studied engineering at Keio University graduating in 1960. He came to the United States and studied architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, graduating in 1964. He worked briefly for architect Walter Gropius who became an important influence.

From 1964-1972, Taniguchi worked for the studio of architect Kenzo Tange who was perhaps the most important Japanese modernist architect, at Tokyo University. Other important collaborations for Taniguchi included Isamu Noguchi, American landscape architect Peter Walker and artist Genichiro Inokuma.

Taniguchi, an internationally renowned architect, is best known for designing a number of Japanese museums including: Nagano Perfectual Museum, Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and Gallery of the Horyuji Treasures at the Tokyo National Museum.

The recipient of the prestigious Praemium Imperiale global arts award, Taniguchi was commissioned to design Asia Society Texas Center's new building. His selection was based on his unique style of blending the essence of modern Asian design with a perfect grasp of the traditional modern architecture in America.
