As the second largest market economy in the world, Japan was the first country to move from "less-developed" to "developed" status in the post World War II-era. Despite the downturn it witnessed in the late '90s, the Japanese economy has in recent years shown signs of recovery. Yet there are concerns over whether this growth is temporary and whether Japan is now emerging as the new "diminished giant"—a phrase coined by Jagdish Bhagwati to refer to the downturn in the US economy during the 1970s-'80s.

Author, academic, Rhodes scholar, recipient of the Mahatma Gandhi-Martin Luther King Daisaku Ikeda Award and former Indian diplomat who has served as Ambassador to Japan, Vietnam, and Greece, Dr. Aftab Seth seeks not only to discern the future course of Japan's economy but also to provide an insight into its geo-strategic role in the region.
