Koryu: Southern Women/South Korea is the first documentary of Soyoung Kim's Women's History Trilogy. The film weaves together simple stories of complicated lives to offer a window to the lives of Korean women: the story of Soyoung's grandmother, whose only opportunity for self-expression was to write eulogies for women in her village; a Chinese immigrant who runs a Chinese restaurant and wishes not to impose barriers on her daughters' future; a teahouse owner whose family circumstances kept her "trapped" from pursuing music study overseas; and the aspiring director, Oh Yoon-jung, who is Soyoung's "script girl" during this project. The film assembles a complex portrait of women's lives as diasporic, or koryu: temporary, living in an alien land, women living in man's land.

Soyoung Kim is Professor and Head of Cinema Studies at the Korean National University of Arts, Seoul. Professor Kim has been an active filmmaker since 1984 and is a widely published film scholar. She served as founding director of the Seoul Women's Film Festival and the Jeonju International Film Festival. Her films have been screened in film festivals across the world.
