Community and Collaboration in Contemporary Art Practice

Art theorist and curator Grant Kester will discuss the work of the art collectives Superflex and Park Fiction, focusing on recent projects they have produced in Tanzania and Germany. His lecture will discuss the complex and contradictory relationship that each project bears to the economic, political and cultural forces of globalization and the operations of non-governmental organizations.
Grant Kester is Associate Professor of Art History and Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program in Art and Media History at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of Art, Activism and Oppositionality: Essays from Afterimage (Duke University Press) and Conversation Pieces: Community and Communication in Modern Art (University of California Press). His current book project is The One and the Many: Agency and Identity in Collaborative Art Practice.
