For the Indian economy to achieve and sustain an annual growth rate of 10%, over a trillion dollars of investment in infrastructure is required from the public and private sector. The panel discussion will explore distortions in economic governance that are impeding this investment and suggest ways to promote well-regulated markets that can help India realize its growth potential.
Dr. C. Rangarajan is the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. His previous appointments include Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, and Member of the Planning Commission. The recipient of the Padma Vibhushan in 2002, Dr. Rangarajan has taught at several universities including the Wharton School, New York University, and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Rakesh Mohan is the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Dr. Mohan's previous positions include Chief Executive, Indian Council for Research and International Economic Relations, Vice Chairman, Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. He obtained his Ph.D. from Princeton University, B.A. from Yale University, and Bachelor of Science from Imperial College.
Mr. S.L. Rao is the Chairman of the board of governors of the Institute for Social and Economic Change and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). An economist by training, he has worked in both the private and public sector. He was previously director general of the National Council for Economic Research and is a director of several companies including, Honeywell Automation India and Reliance Natural Resources Limited.
A lawyer with the Supreme Court and Member Parliament, Mr. E.M.S. Natchiappan has served on various parliamentary committees and takes a keen interest in the spheres of education, agriculture, human resource development, and human rights.
Mr. Arvind Mayaram, a 1978 batch officer from the Rajasthan cadre, is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs. Mr. Arun Nanda is an Executive Director with Mahindra & Mahindra and is also Chairman Emeritus of the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mr. G.N. Bajpai has served as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India where he is credited with streamlining the securities and market regulators. He has previously also served as Chairman of the Life Insurance Corporation. Mr. Pradip Baijal, recently retired as Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. He previously held senior administrative position in the Ministry of Finance and industries at the state level.
