HOUSTON, November 14, 2019 — It’s all food and fun at Asia Society as the year winds down! Guests can get in on the kabuki action of the exhibition Tsuruya Kōkei: Kabuki Prints Revised & Revisited by joining an adults-only, hands-on workshop to learn about Kabuki makeup while enjoying nibbles and adult beverages on December 6. On December 7, we welcome Chef Naoki Yoshida of Shun Japanese Kitchen for a discussion on “second-generation” Japanese cuisine, followed by light bites and a sake-tasting. Finally, families are invited to explore Chinese and Japanese culture at our Family Craft Day: Winter Wonderland on December 14!
Adult Art Workshop: The Drama of Kabuki
In celebration of our Tsuruya Kōkei exhibition, become a Kabuki actor for the night! Paint your own Kabuki makeup designs and create Kabuki origami. Complimentary tea, wine, and light snacks with ticket purchase.

Seasonal and Local: Houston's New Take on Japanese Cuisine
Chef Naoki Yoshida of Shun Japanese Kitchen discusses "second-generation" Japanese cuisine and how a restaurant can stand out in Houston. Light bites and a sake-tasting will follow the program.

Family Craft Day: Winter Wonderland
Welcome in winter with our all-ages workshop! Learn about seasonal celebrations in Japan and China and create holiday-themed origami ornaments, wintry woodblock prints, and replicas of famous Chinese ice sculptures.
When: Saturday, December 14, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Ongoing Exhibitions
Tsuruya Kōkei: Kabuki Prints Revised & Revisited
The exhibition presents all of Tsuruya Kōkei’s kabuki actor prints from 1983 to 1993. Because the artist limited his editions, such a complete collection is unprecedented and represents a first in Texas. To explore the broader contours of kabuki actor prints, Kōkei’s work is contextualized by actor prints by Sharaku, as well as two dozen additional works by contemporary Japanese and western artists.

Form is Emptiness, Empitness is Form: Works by Miya Ando [NEW]
Drawing on the important Buddhist text known as the Heart Sutra, artist Miya Ando makes her Asia Society debut responding to the Center’s unique building with references to elemental materials such as metal, light, water, and wood. This site-specific response to Yoshio Taniguchi’s architecture reframes the visitor's perception of the space, and invites contemplation of the nature of reality.
