HOUSTON, May 7, 2014 — On April 16, 2014, the tragic sinking of a South Korean ferry claimed hundreds of lives and sent shockwaves around the world. The ferry Sewol—carrying 476 passengers and crew, including 325 high school students from Ansan—was en route to Jeju from Incheon when it sank near South Korea’s southwest coast. In the midst of investigations surrounding the ship’s fate and its leadership, search and rescue operations continue as the toll rises to over 300 people dead or unaccounted for.
