In May 2014, the world’s largest democracy elected Narendra Modi as the 15th Prime Minister of India. The election of Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) signaled change and incited hopes for a revived economy. Since his election, Modi’s administration has focused heavily on domestic economic reform and increased foreign investment—on India’s terms.
Dr. Anish Goel, Senior South Asia Fellow at the New America Foundation, will discuss Modi’s pragmatism as he seeks to position India as a global power.
About Anish Goel
Anish Goel is the Senior South Asia Fellow at the New America Foundation and one of the nation’s foremost experts on South Asia. From 2008 to 2011, Goel served as the National Security Council (NSC) Senior Director for South Asia where he provided non-partisan guidance on developing and implementing White House policy for both President Bush and Obama. Prior to joining NSC, Goel served as the chief science and technology officer for South Asia where he led government efforts on the US-India civil nuclear cooperation initiative as well as strategic support to Secretaries of State and other senior officials. Goel has a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in chemical engineering and a B.S.E. in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan.
