Family Day: South Asia
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn celebration of Houston Museum District's Museum Experience: Zone 2, a special family experience will look at South Asian art, music, and traditions. The most populous region in Asia, this area of the world includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Other countries sometimes within the definition are Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, and Tibet. Please join us for activities throughout the day and don't forget to come back the following week for the opening weekend of our newest exhibition, Transcendent Deities of India: The Everyday Occurrence of the Divine.

South Asian Paper Lotuses
11:00 am – 5:00 pm | The Edward Rudge Allen III Education Center
Take part in our activity zone, featuring small Indian lamps popular during Diwali, a project inspired from lacquerware across Asia, and paper creations of the lotus, a flower common throughout South Asia. Recommended for ages 4 and older.

Inspired by Asia Society Texas Center’s next exhibition, Transcendent Deities of India: The Everyday Occurrence of the Divine, learn to create a Filipino vampire, Korean goblin, Japanese child sumo wrestler, and Chinese nine-tailed fox. Recommended for ages 12 and younger. Repeat workshop at 2:00 pm.

Listen to the animal fables of Kalilah and Dimnah, which first appeared in the epic Panchatantra. Recommended for ages 10 and younger.
Marathon Boy Film Screening

Learn the story of Budhia Singh, an East Indian slum boy who captures the attention a nation as he trains for an Olympic future. Recommended for ages 13 and older due to some adult situations and brief scenes of violence.
