Rebuilding Lives After the Tsunami: Addressing the Needs of Women and Children with Carol Bellamy
Wednesday, March 30, 2005 6:30 – 8:00 pm

The health and well-being of women and children have been directly impacted in the aftermath of the tsunami. UNICEF estimates that children account for up to one-third of all tsunami related deaths and injuries, and thousands of children have been orphaned by the disaster. Additionally, the trafficking of women and children poses a grave risk, the threat of communicable diseases is real, and scarce resources like educational and health services have been widely destroyed in the region. This discussion will focus on the particular needs and vulnerabilities of women and children during the rebuilding process. It will highlight critical regional and international partnerships that are necessary for a comprehensive strategy as well as recognizing the important role of women in rebuilding their communities.

Keynote Speaker: Carol Bellamy, Executive Director, UNICEF
Moderated by: Lynn Sherr, Senior Correspondent, ABC 20/20 News
