Paulson Cautions Against Protectionism, Nationalism in US-China Economic Relations

WASHINGTON, DC, Dec. 5, 2007 - U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry M. Paulson Jr. addressed the Asia Society Washington Center in advance of the third Cabinet-level meeting of the U.S.-China Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) in Beijing on December 12-13. Secretary Paulson emphasized the need for both countries to counter a rising tide of economic nationalism and protectionist attitudes.

The Secretary also addressed exchange rate policy and product safety, arguing in the latter case that the U.S. focus on food and product safety is emphatically not part of a strategy to restrict Chinese imports and thereby reduce the bilateral trade deficit.

The luncheon event was sponsored by the Carlyle Group, JP Morgan, and AIG.
