Half-Day Conference - October 3, 2002, 8:30 am -- 1:30 pm
The Asia Society, in collaboration with the Australian Consulate General of New York and the American Australian Association, will host a half-day conference on Australia's development as a global business center. Through roundtable discussions and keynote speeches, corporate and government leaders will discuss a range of issues including the implications of a U.S.-Australia free trade agreement, and the prospects for Australia becoming a primary economic hub for foreign multinationals doing business in Asia. This conference is held as part of the Asia Society and Museum's Australia OutFront 2002 initiative, a multidisciplinary series that focuses on Australia through programs and exhibitions.

9:35 A New Era of Economic Cooperation: The Future of US - Australian Trade
Relations
The opening roundtable discussion will assess the implications of the proposed US-Australia free trade agreement. As the US' business interests in Asia continue to become one of its top priorities, Australia has emerged as a logical partner for the US in Asia. Traditional impediments to doing business in Australia such as transportation, expensive labor, and small markets are becoming more and more obsolete. The transparency of its financial systems and the familiarity of the regulatory structures makes Australia an attractive base for multinationals operating in Asia. This panel will address some of the opportunities, as well as some of the roadblocks, resulting from an enhanced US-Australian trade relationship.

Mark Vaile, Minister for Trade of Australia
