It's All Relative: Discovering the Filipino Identity through Forensic Science
VIEW EVENT DETAILSDo you know who and what we as Filipinos are made of? Do you want to know where we came from? If we knew, what could we do about it?
Join Asia Society Philippines in a rare opportunity on "It’s All Relative: Discovering the Filipino Identity through DNA Science". Featuring scientists from the DNA Analysis Laboratory, Natural Sciences Research Institute, University of the Philippines, Diliman (UPD-NSRI-DAL), the evening of talks will provide insights on history, biology and population genetics of Filipinos. The program will tackle the latest key scientific findings, in order to discuss how these contribute to the preservation and overall unification of Philippine culture and history. The program will also explore the applications of genetic research in health, in forensics and in business. The evening's discussions will go into the implications of the conduct of scientific research on indigenous peoples towards the formulation of public policies that respect their culture and tradition.
Speakers:

Science and culture meet in this unique program. Filipino-American dance artist Sharon Estacio, in collaboration with cultural anthropologist Giovanna Rovedo, will show excerpts of their documented dance journey on rediscovering what it means to be Filipino in different parts of the world.
There will also be a special exhibition featuring photographs by Alison Domzalski where DNA sequences are married to portraits of the scientists and researchers of the UPD-NSRI-DAL. The image of the modern Filipino will be intermixed with selected images of indigenous people groups such as the Mangyans of Mindoro by Jacob Maentz , the Ivatans of Batanes by Dr. Francisco Datar and the Kalingas of the Cordillera Mountains by Jinggo Montenejo.
