Constraining Consumption: Asia’s Role in Reshaping Capitalism
VIEW EVENT DETAILSA Luncheon Presentation by Chandran Nair
The Western model of consumption-led economic growth cannot be replicated in Asia, says Chandran Nair. He urges governments, business leaders and academics to rethink economic policy and acknowledge both the undesirable effects of consumption and the limits to growth. In his new book Consumptionomics: Asia's Role in Reshaping Capitalism and Saving the Planet, Nair outlines the problem and offers solutions.
Chandran Nair is Founder and CEO of the Global Institute for Tomorrow (GIFT), an independent think tank dedicated to advancing understanding of globalization’s impact and helping corporations and their leaders meet the challenges of doing business in Asia. In advocating a more sustainable approach to development in Asia, he tackles head-on what is certain to be the most controversial political issue of the next few decades.
Moisés Naím, former editor of Foreign Policy magazine, calls reconciling the needs of billions of new consumers with the requirements of a planet already showing the strains of ecological carelessness and overexploitation “one of the urgent challenges facing humanity. Consumptionomics shows what it will take to rise to this challenge and what the consequences of failing to do so would be.”
A book sale and signing will follow the luncheon talk.
