Aung San Suu Kyi – Lady of No Fear
VIEW EVENT DETAILSNobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi is known first and foremost as the political opposition leader at the center of 20 years of social unrest and turmoil in Burma/Myanmar. Yet what many do not know is that before returning to her homeland in 1988 and joining the struggle for freedom, she was living a quiet life in England with her husband, Oxford academic Michael Aris.
The documentary Lady of No Fear offers a close-up of Suu Kyi and Aris, who died in 1999 on his 53rd birthday, still unable to see his wife. Together these two gave up their normal life and marriage for the cause of freedom in Burma/Myanmar. Directed by Anne Gyrithe Bonne, the film is a tribute to the woman at the heart of the rebellion, her steadfast husband and supporter, and her adherence to nonviolent civic resistance. Lady of No Fear offers a powerful, fascinating glimpse into Aung San Suu Kyi's life and portrays some of the consequences her freedom struggle has had, not only for her, but also for her closest friends and family.
Post-screening discussion with Oxford academic Peter Carey, colleague and friend of Michael Aris, and Ian Holliday, Professor of Political Science, University of Hong Kong.
