Translating Culture with Pema Tseden and Evans Chan
HONG KONG, October 31, 2014 — Co-presented with the Center of Translation from Hong Kong Baptist University, Asia Society Hong Kong Center invited Tibetan filmmaker and writer Pema Tseden and Evans Chan, Hong Kong filmmaker and writer, for an evening lecture about cultural translation. With both speakers having diverse cultural backgrounds, the topic of the evening encircles around the influences and outcomes of such multicultural identity on their artistic creations.
Both being bilingual, Pema and Evans delved into their experiences in translation, communicating through their works in two languages.「寫作就是純粹一個表達。」“Writing is simply a form of communication,” said Tseden, and looking back, translation for his people has been part of daily life in which Tibetan students learned Mandarin and Tibetan are taught simultaneously. "Artistic expression itself is to communicate, and that itself is a translation process," mused Evans.
