It was researchers from the Institut Pasteur who first identified the Ebola outbreak in Guinea in March last year, tracking “Patient zero” to a two-year-old who died just days after falling ill in December 2013. Researchers have since been tracing the virus' spread through Guinea to establish if the disease could become more contagious. The international landscape of public health has been put under the spotlight by the outbreak. The crisis has shown the importance and strategic role of an international mobilization in the fight against infectious diseases. Prof. Christian Brechot, President of the Institut Pasteur will outline why collaboration is needed in the fight against infectious diseases and how the ebola outbreak is being handled, while Dr. Amadou Sall, Scientific Director of the Institut Pasteur of Dakar, Senegal, will share his unique experience from the frontline of the most deadly ever Ebola outbreak in the world.
Christian Brechot is President of the Institut Pasteur. He previously acted as General Director of Inserm, the French National Agency for biomedical research and was in charge of a research unit at the Necker Faculty of Medicine. Prof. Brechot has been a member of numerous scientific committees and societies and the recipient of numerous awards. He has authored of over 350 articles and his research activities have led him to obtain 13 patents. He obtained his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Paris VII.
Amadou Sall is Scientific Director of the Institut Pasteur in Dakar and Director of the WHO Collaborating Center. He is also a consultant and member of expert committees of the WHO, OIE and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network. Dr. Sall was Visiting Research Scientist at Columbia University and has participated in several field outbreak investigations on diseases including yellow fever and Ebola. He is the author of more than 90 papers and book chapters. Dr. Sall received the Senegal Presidential Award for Science and obtained his PhD in Public Health in France.
