Carmi Gillon will discuss the conflict between civil rights and the rights of the individual to live a normal life in peace and harmony. Gillon has had a long and varied career in Israel’s public and private sectors. Beginning in 1972, he held command positions in the Israeli Security Service (Shin Bet), eventually serving as head of Shin Bet from 1994-1996. He later went on to become the CEO of Avner Insurance Corporation and then CEO of the Peres Peace Center before his appointment in 2001 as the Ambassador of Israel to Denmark. He was also the Mayor of Mevasseret Zion, where he resides, from 2003-2007.
Gillon also serves on a number of nonprofit and public sector boards, including Variety Israel, Friends of the Israel Firefighters, Bnai Brith Israel, Israel Intelligence Heritage Commemoration Center, and Council for Peace and Security. He has written extensively on issues of state and security, and his book Shabak in Tears was published in 2000. He graduated in Political Science and Public Administration from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and received his M.A from Haifa University.
