Join us in honoring the winner of the first annual Bernard Schwartz book award, a prize given to recognize excellence in nonfiction writing on Asia or U.S.-Asia relations. Duncan McCargo is one of the world’s leading scholars on Thailand. His award winning book, Tearing Apart the Land: Islam and Legitimacy in Southern Thailand examines the violent separatist insurgency that has raged in southern Thailand since 2004 and has resulted in more than three thousand deaths. Tearing Apart the Land offers an illuminating account of Southeast Asia, Islam, insurgency and counterinsurgency movements, with relevance for hotspots around the globe.
