Support

Primary funding for the schools in the International Studies Schools Network comes from local school districts and federal and state education resources.  The overall network was established in 2003 by Asia Society with a generous five-year grant of $7.5 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  In 2006, Asia Society received a grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas to support the creation of two additional schools in Texas.  In 2007, Asia Society received a second grant of $2.08 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the ongoing development of the network.

These grants provide financial assistance to the schools and help sustain other forms of support, including:

  • Professional development activities, such as an annual summer institute and small group seminars for network faculty throughout the school year
  • An ongoing Coaches and Leaders' Seminar for school leadership teams
  • International studies curriculum materials, review of existing curriculum, and related curriculum development
  • School-based coaching to assist school faculty as they plan, implement, and sustain an effective international studies school
  • Expert consultants to provide assistance on content, pedagogy, organization, and governance
  • Faculty visits to exemplary international studies schools
  • Online learning communities and virtual Critical Friends Groups
  • Assistance in forming partnerships with universities, businesses and nonprofits, cultural institutions, and museums to provide internationally oriented experiences for students
  • Formative evaluation studies to support data-based planning
