Academy of International Studies
The Academy of International Studies (AIS) at Independence High School has approximately 375 students in grades 9-12. AIS is open to all students and is a “school within a school” which is housed on the campus of a large comprehensive school that serves 3,000 students. AIS students share all of their core classes within the Academy and take elective classes in the larger school. The curriculum has an emphasis on international studies and global awareness of current issues. AIS students are given the opportunity to develop relationships and experiences with other cultures, societies, and people of the contemporary world. Students are required to complete 120 hours of service learning as well as a 40 hour internship that is globally focused. AIS students must also take 4 years of Spanish or Chinese.
School Highlights:
The students and faculty at the Academy of International Studies are very proud of their school culture. Even though AIS is part of a large comprehensive school, the students have a great deal of loyalty to AIS. The small, personalized environment enables teachers to know all the students extremely well. In addition, the Model UN class has not only taught students more and more about the world, but has also empowered them to become effective decision makers and problem solvers.
School Voices:
Being a teacher in the Academy has rejuvenated me! I love that I can teach students in a creative way. I am learning more about our world every day. I also love the closeness that has been achieved with my students. This Is how all children should be educated. - Academy for International Studies Teacher |
