Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art Awards Grant to Asia Society NY for Performing Arts Project
Asia Society NY has been awarded $100,000 from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art through its Building Bridges Program. The grant will support Encounters at the Crossroads, a two-year performing arts project that will include our partnership with the Aga Khan Music Initiative, and which is part of our interdisciplinary Creative Voices of Muslim Asia initiative. Encounters at the Crossroads seeks to deepen understanding of the diversity of Muslim cultures through music and innovative shadow puppetry aimed at both American Muslim and non-Muslim youth audiences. Asia Society has received three previous grants from the foundation over the last eight years is support of Creative Voices of Muslim Asia. The Foundation’s support has helped make it possible to present such luminaries as Iranian singer Shahram Nazeri, Pakistani superstar Abida Parveen, Indian actor Naseerudin Shah, Indonesia’s dancers of Aceh among others.
