Understanding the Indian Ethos: A discussion on how religious traditions provide an orientation to life for Indians
VIEW EVENT DETAILSIn a fast-globalizing economy, a basic understanding of cross-cultural issues, business practices, and sensitivity to dealing with people from different parts of the world are pre-requisites to success in business, government, and academia - and ultimately to addressing the many problems we face as a global community.
A rich array of religious beliefs and practices still guide the way Indians live, work, and understand themselves in the grand scheme of things.
Asia Society and its partners, India-U.S. World Affairs Institute, U.S. India Business Council, ICA Institute, East-West Center and the University of Memphis will co-host an event that will enhance one's understanding of India through a discussion of the great Indian religions- Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, that evolved during the period of immense transformation known as the Axial Age (800 B.C.E. - 200 B.C.E.).
Dr. Mark W. Muesse will help participants explore some of the pivotal metaphysical and ethical dilemmas that arose during this era and are still with us: Where have we come from? Who are we really? Why are we here? What can be known with certainty? What is our ultimate destiny? He will also discuss the emergence of the distinctive features of the Indian worldviews, including rebirth, karma, duty, caste, and the appreciation of diversity.
Please RSVP by Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Refreshments will be provided at this event.
