The Terrorist
VIEW EVENT DETAILSOn May 21, 1991, India's Prime Minister, the late Rajiv Gandhi, was campaigning in Tamil Nadu on behalf of a United Communist Party of India (UCPI) candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections, when he was assassinated by a suicide bomber in the South Indian town of Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.
Master cinematographer and first-time director Santosh Sivan used this event as the inspiration for his critically acclaimed Indian film The Terrorist, which won awards at the Cinemanila, Sarajevo, and Ale Kino International Film Festivals. American Actor/Director John Malkovich was so impressed by the film that he vowed to release it in the United States.
The lead character in the film, Malli (Ayesha Dharkar), is a 19 year-old woman whose country, target, and ideology are never identified, and she is honored to be chosen as a suicide bomber. She captures viewers' hearts immediately. As Malli ponders over what's expected of her in the near future, her trudge through the Sri Lankan jungle to a terrorist training site is both haunting and beautiful.
