Afghanistan's Road to Reconstruction: A Reformist's Perspective
VIEW EVENT DETAILSDr. Abdullah Abdullah is a major political figure in Afghanistan today. He was a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and a candidate in the 2009 Afghan presidential election.
Prior to registering as a candidate for Afghanistan's 2009 Presidential elections, Dr. Abdullah was Secretary General of the Massoud Foundation. Previously, he worked at the government since 1986 and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan from 1998 to 2006.
Dr. Abdullah has been trying to assist his country in different ways, even as Afghanistan faced severe situations. He served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Afghan government-in exile (1996), which was officially recognized by the United Nations and members of the international community; served as spokesperson for the Defense Ministry of the Islamic State of Afghanistan (1992) after the Afghan resistance regained control of Kabul; and was the Special Advisor and close confidant of the legendary Commander and National Hero of Afghanistan, the Late Ahmad Shah Masoud (1986).
After Dr. Abdullah received his M.D. degree in ophthalmology at Kabul University's Department of Medicine in 1983, he went on to serve as the Resident Ophthalmologist at the Noor Eye Institute in Kabul. Later on, he left Afghanistan to provide assistance for Afghan refugee families at the Sayed Jamaluddin Hospital and the Ophthalmology Hospital in Pakistan and became Director of Healthcare for the Resistance Front (1984-1986).
