Photo of the Day: Haze in Singapore
The mid-morning sun struggles to shine through a thick smoke haze above the three towers of the Marina Bay Sands casino resort on Singapore, Friday June 21, 2013. Massive fires, many of them deliberately lit in the dry season to clear forest and scrubland on Sumatra in Indonesia, produced a dense blanket of acrid smoke that blew over and enveloped Singapore. Pollution levels have reached record and hazardous levels. Authorities in the normally pristine city-state have warned its citizens to stay indoors and to wear face masks when outdoors. Singapore has also demanded that Indonesia crack down on the illegal burning. Meanwhile, environmentalists say large tracks of forest are being torched to make way for lucrative palm oil plantations amid claims that much of the burning has been bankrolled by companies based in Singapore and neighboring Malaysia, which has also been hit hard by the smog crisis.
