Has President Obama Failed in Burma?
The Washington Post has printed an op-ed written by Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, former UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, who urges President Obama to follow through on his commitment to reengage Burma by making U.S. policy toward the country a "high-level priority."
Pinheiro, a member of the Asia Society's Task Force on U.S. Policy toward Burma/Myanmar, stresses that the United States has "limited time to turn around their policy" ahead of planned elections in Burma later this year. In addition to quickly appointing a U.S. Special Envoy to Burma, Pinheiro calls on the United States to ramp up its efforts to work in concert with allies and other countries in the region to address the situation in Burma.
