The 2007 Summit

The tremendous success of the 2006 Summit created greater awareness for the program within the region and engendered an increase in participation the following year. More than 210 delegates from 29 countries attended the 2007 Summit, held from October 5-7 in Singapore and which was formally opened by Singaporean President S.R. Nathan. In his keynote speech, President Nathan urged the delegates to "think ahead of the concerns that future leaders in Asia must address and thereby play a major role in contributing to Asia's future growth, stability and prosperity."

Plenary and small group discussions centered around the main theme of "Moving Forward Together: Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in the Asia-Pacific" and explored the roles and responsibilities of each sector, i.e. business, media, women, cultural minorities, towards the achievement of this goal. Delegates likewise talked about how social entrepreneurship, environmental protection and cultural traditions factored into the growth of fast-changing societies.

A keynote address by Palagummi Sainath, 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communications Arts, preceded the presentation of the 2007 Asia 21 Public Service Award to Odanandi Seva Samsthe in recognition of their courageous effort to help women and children impacted by the sex trade in India.

Rounding off the events for the Summit were a fiesty debate on whether economic growth is a necessary prerequisite for democratic development, the regular "Moments of Truth" session where delegates shared personal stories on facing hard choices, and , "Constructing an Ideal Society" performances which showed off the talent, wisdom, and creativity of our young leaders.
