Asia 21 Young Leaders Collaborate on Tibetan Issues
Six month ago, Umanga Pandey (Asia 21 Young Leader, Dhaka 2012), Executive Director of KG (Kehi Garaun) in Nepal and Jinqian Liu (Asia 21 Young Leader, Dhaka 2012), Assistant Professor at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) in China didn’t have the slightest idea that their paths would cross as they have, courtesy of Asia 21.
Umanga and Jinqian were selected as participants to the Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit in Dhaka, Bangladesh last December. The connection they formed at the Summit—during formal discussions, on the sidelines, and during the ride to the airport—led Jinqian to reach out to Umanga regarding a planned trip to Nepal with experts from SASS. Six months later, Umanga was instrumental in arranging a dialogue, including Liu, on the delicate issue of Tibet. The SASS delegation met with leading thinkers in Nepal, including members of the Tibetan community in Kathmandu. These meetings helped Liu’s team to better understand refugee issues and stressed the importance of deeper cooperation between India, China, and Nepal in addressing common challenges.
