This is one of the best known Kashmiri metal sculptures in American collections. When it was acquired by Asian art historian Sherman Lee at The Cleveland Museum of Art in 1966, its beauty helped to stimulate American interest in Kashmiri sculpture. The figure’s long, elegant proportions and gently swaying body are characteristic of sculpture from both the northwestern and north central regions of India and relate the image to Gupta period figures from northern India between the 5th and 6th century. |
