Jama Masjid
Built in 1385 by Sultan Sikander and enlarged by Zain-ul-Abidin
Srinagar
The Jama Masjid, a mosque in Srinagar built during the Sultanate period (13th–16th century), is an impressive example of Islamic architecture. The wooden structure was destroyed by fire so many times that Emperor Aurangzeb (r. 1658–1707) ordered that the surrounding houses be razed to protect the mosque. The structure's layout, with an open courtyard and wide colonnades bordered by majestic unadorned pillars, is characteristic of Kashmiri mosques, which tended to have minimal ornamentation. |
