Ivory panel with seated Buddha, bodhisattvas, and retinue, set in polychrome wood and architectural frame
8th century
Kanoria Collection, India
Despite the popularity of Buddhism in Kashmir, almost no examples of Buddhist architecture have survived. Sculptures such as this one give us some indication of what Buddhist architecture may have looked like. This sculpture shows columns with twisted fluting, niches, and pediments, elements which link this Buddhist architecture to early Hindu architecture. |
