Works in Japanese

The following Japanese-language works are important sources of illustrations, and provide English translations of captions. Genshoku nihon no bijutsu, edited by Akiyama Terukazu et al. (Tokyo: Shogakkan, 1967-80) is 32 impressive volumes covering all the arts from all periods. A newer, even more spectacular series is the 24-volume Nihon bijutsu no zenshu (Tokyo: Kodansha, 1990-). An important 10-volume series dealing with Japanese art in foreign collections - mostly in the United States - is Zaigai nihon no shiho, edited by Shimada Shujiro, Akiyama Terukazu, and Yamane Yuzoo (Tokyo: Mainichi Newspaper Co., 1980-82).
