Asian American Children: What Teachers Should Know
From the U.S. government comes this text-heavy but informative resource: "Asian-Americans constitute a significant minority in the U.S. and are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in this country, yet little is known about their particular educational needs, especially at the early childhood and elementary levels. This digest provides information to help teachers gain a better understanding of Asian-American children, particularly those from East and Southeast Asian cultures.
Coalition for Asian-American Children & Families
The Coalition for Asian-American Children and Families pursues "social policies and programs which support Asian-American children and families, empowering Asian-Americans to advocate for change, and giving service providers culturally sensitive training and resources." The site is loaded with information on the organization as well as the general affairs of Asian Americans. An excellent resource.
Asian American Arts Alliance
The Asian American Arts Alliance is a New York-based organization dedicated to "increasing the support, recognition and appreciation of Asian American Arts." The site includes a summary of their history, a calendar of local events in various artistic pursuits, and information on its programs and services.
Career Success
This career website for Asian Americans offers links to job listings, advice on "Making the Best of Workplace Stereotypes" as well as features on 50 of the best and 20 of the worse employers for Asian Americans. There are also sections dedicated to Asian American women such as "Surviving Sexual Harassment," "Power Makeup Tips," and "Five Common Traps for Asian American Female Executives."
Asian /Asian American Music
This former host of the Asian American radio show, "Gold Mountain" on WPFW 89.3 FM, the DC community station owned by Pacifica, offers reviews of Asian and Asian American music.
Asian American Rising
This site profiles Asian American artists, presenting their background and musical specialty. You can select featured artists from 1996 to 1999. There is also a links page that focuses on Asian Americans in entertainment.
Asian Improv
On the Asian Improv website you can read about and listen to audio clips of 14 Asian American musicians and composers. Asia Improv's mission is to work for "the cultural empowerment of the Asian Pacific American community by creating, presenting and recording the diverse, cross-cultural work of Asian Pacific American artists and their collaborators." Their independent record label, Asian Improv Records, covers over 30 titles of Asian American music.
Asian Man Records
Information on Asian American bands, concerts, and merchandise. The site reviews new releases, gives tour dates, and profiles new bands, though be warned that most of the photos don't come through.
Asian/Asian American Music Reviews
This homespun site is devoted to contemporary music by Asians and Asian Americans and includes reviews, article summaries, interviews, pictures and more. Also includes a very useful calendar of upcoming concerts.
